The South-West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is a Western Australia- based, Noongar Community Controlled Health Organisation. SWAMS supports Aboriginal health through tailored programs and services relating to Health, Disability Services, Mental Health, Dental, Child & Maternal Health, Transport and Chronic Conditions.
Project Summary
The #thismymob app is Australia's first digital platform solely dedicated towards connecting Indigenous people, their families and their mobs. It has been rolled out with a number of Indigenous communities around the country as a one-stop shop to facilitate interactions between users, their mobs, Elders and appropriate government and industry organisations.
This project repurposed the #thismymob app. Providing SWAMS a ready-to-use version of the app allows them to connect with the communities they service in Western Australia in a digital and safe fashion: a necessity given the social distance and isolation these communities now face, in light of Covid-19.
The design budget for this project was minimal, so focused mostly on capturing insights from the SWAMS stakeholders through iterations of wireframes and high fidelity mockups. We also included a small usability study with end users.
The final outcome includes an admin interface where SWAMS staff can post news articles to keep the community informed, communicate with mobs and groups along with manage the online community, and the mobile application for aboriginal people to connect with their mobs, community groups and publicly with all app users.
UX Insights
Users do not know all mobs in south Western Australia by name, and sometimes the names of each mob are in another language. In response, a description was provided in English beside mob names.

Project Outcome
A native social media mobile application and complimentary admin web portal.
The native mobile application allows SWAMS patients:
to create posts and comment on posts within closed mobs and groups, and to a public forum,
to access news articles on medical topics from SWAMS and their partners, and
to customise their profile, privacy settings and push notifications.
The admin web portal allows SWAMS staff the ability to:
publish news articles,
post to closed mobs and groups and to the public forum,
create new and manage existing mobs and groups,
manage any inappropriate behaviour on the app, and
see stats on app activity in the last 24 hours.
